We typically grind several inches below ground level - deep enough that you can put fresh soil over it and plant grass or sod without the old stump showing through. If you're planning to put in a deeper feature like a new tree or a post in the same spot, let us know and we'll grind lower where we can.
Grinding takes out the stump and the surface roots we can reach around it. The deeper roots underground are left to break down naturally over time, which they do on their own. For most lawns and beds that's exactly what you want - chasing every root would tear up far more of your yard than it's worth.
Yes. Once we rake out the grindings and level the spot, you can top it with soil and seed or lay sod. Wood grindings can pull a little nitrogen from the soil as they break down, so adding some fresh topsoil first gives new grass the best start. We're happy to point you in the right direction.
